November - December, 2004:

"PAINTINGS BY PATRICIA CARRIGAN & MONOTYPES BY LIZ PAGANO"

Patricia Carrigan

Artist Statement
For me, painting is about telling stories and recalling memories. The predominant focus of my studio work is on heritage and how memories we pass on from generation to generation shift and evolve in significance depending upon what we choose to remember and what we choose to forget.
I work primarily in oil painting, drawing, or mixed media collage on primed canvas, board, or prepared papers usually on a series of 6 - 8 pieces at a time. I often will layer several surfaces and images, covering and uncovering as I go, seeking out what lies above or below my original image. This process of working abstractly with some definitive reference points reveals bits of imagery slowly over time like the telling of a story. I am most interested in how stories of personal experiences, myths, and personal legends change and alter each time told and how often we actively choose to rewrite history each time we tell a story.

About The Artist
Patricia Carrigan has exhibited her work since 1990 several solo, group, and juried exhibitions both nationally and throughout the Northeast. Ms. Carrigan received her Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Drawing from the University of Connecticut at Storrs and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts and Art Education from Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. Patricia has been awarded numerous grants including an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, A Studio Fellowship from the Greater Hartford Arts Council, and most recently a Residency Fellowship from The Ballinglen Arts Foundation of Country Mayo Ireland. She has been named a Master Teaching Artist for the Connecticut Commission on the Arts and in addition to her studio work currently teaches painting and drawing part-time at Manchester Community College.

Artist Statement
A ring left by a coffee cup
Bark peeling off a tree
Oxidizing copper
Rusting metal
Stains, swirls, cracks, pits, and scars
A leaf that has fallen onto a
newly paved sidewalk then is
rained on, leaving a ghostly
impression of itself

Accidental beauty inspires me. I
love looking at textures and how
they reveal a history.

I’m always searching for
unexpected possibilities. My work
magnifies moments, capturing
movements, sometimes reactions
or fusions.
It’s gestural.

The part I can’t control keeps me
chasing/searching/moving

My process is about exploring
interactions of chance and control,
of coincidence and intent.
